A petition started against a Conservative alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party is surely a magnificent piece of trolling. Here’s why!
Everyone knows the Conservatives failed to reach a majority with which to form a government after last Thursday’s national election. We also know that the Tories are pinning hopes on a deal with the DUP to benefit from their 10 MPs’ support.
In a petition destined for 10 Downing Street, an individual named Winston Churchill laid out the following concerns:
Here is a list of DUP stances, in case you need a reminder:
The DUP want to make it legal to discriminate against anyone from the LGBT community.
The DUP want children to be taught creationism as scientific fact.
The DUP want no woman to have access to any type of abortion, and furthermore criminalise anyone offering or seeking that service.
The DUP want to bring back the death penalty
Theresa May should RESIGN. This is a disgusting, desperate attempt to stay in power.
The petition has certainly brought excitement to the government’s opponents, primarily hailing from the defeated Left, and reached 721,674 signatures as of this morning. It needs only 100,000 to be considered for a parliamentary debate.
But three items of evidence suggest that instead of being a valid campaign against the new government, it is in fact a massive trolling of hypocrisy on the political Left:
Wasting Leftists’ time, hopes and energy
The first issue is that petitions to Parliament must be started (and subsequently signed) by British citizens or UK residents. The chances of someone named Winston Churchill starting a parliamentary petition are remote.
For those younger folks who don’t know history, Winston Churchill was Britain’s Conservative Prime Minister during the years of World War II.
A petitions committee (once formed by the new government) will likely decide it is invalid due to not being started by a real person.
Left’s hypocrisy over Islam
At a time when successive governments, as well as the political Left, have ignored concerns over Sharia law taking hold in Musllim communities across the country, and being further imported through unvetted immigration, each of the petitions’ specified concerns could equally be applied to Islam:
- Discrimination against the LGBT community – Islam condemns homosexuality, to a point where it’s considered abhorrent. Practicing homosexuals are regularly punished by being thrown from high buildings in Muslim-majority countries across the Middle East and North Africa.
- Creationism – Islam is founded on the theory of Creationism.
- Criminalising women seeking abortion – Islam imposes far more restrictions on the rights of women than just abortion.
- Death penalty – Islamic countries regularly practice the death penalty in public squares in Islamic states. Also, Islamic terrorists regularly murder those they consider infidels on streets across Europe and in Britain.
But while the Left will vilify the DUP with unbridled glee, it consistently maintains a blind spot when such concerns are raised against Islam.
Labour and DUP
Finally, and most magnificent in terms of trolling, Gordon Brown’s Labour Party – the party of the British Left – sought deals with the DUP when faced with a similarly hung Parliament in 2010.
Oh what a delicious piece of utterly mischievous trolling, huh?
